Twenty thousand leagues under the sea is the classic jules verne novel of underwater exploration. The 20 000 refers to the distance travelled rather then the depth of ocean, as the literal translation of the title refers to "Seas" the title then implies that the novel travels through the "Seven Seas"

The novel begins with a sighting of a legendary sea monster that also manages to damage an ocean liner. The US government assemble an expedition to track down and destroy this creature. The narrator of the story is french marine biologist (who happens to be in the USA) Professor Pierre Aronnax, as he is considered a leader in the field he is called upon to assist the expedition.

The expedition sets sail aboard the Naval ship the Abraham Lincoln and they travel to the pacific Ocean in search of the beast. Afte some time the ship eventually tracks the creature down and in the ensuing battle, the ship is damaged and three people thrown overboard. They find themselves standing on the sea monstyer, only to find out it is a large metal submarine (The Nautlilus).
